- Abstract
- This paper explores the exhibition catalogues designed by Willem Sandberg (1897–1984), director of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam from 1945 until 1962. Sandberg worked as museum director, curator, graphic designer and typographer, and designed more than 250 exhibition catalogues himself. These catalogues were in high international demand and demonstrate intriguing choices concerning typography, paper selection, and the integration of reproductions of artworks. In almost each case, the design was tailored to the artist(s) and the exhibition. For Sandberg, the design of his catalogues went hand in hand with exhibition making. He stated that the layout of a page helped him with the layout of an exhibition space and the layout of his museum. Focusing on a representative selection of catalogues, this paper will discuss formal and material choices linking them back to the subject of each catalogue. This paper further explores Sandberg’s analogy between book design and exhibition design.
