Abstract
Starting from the question why different forms of contentious politics in Africa, from rural uprisings to armed rebellions, have for so long been studied separately and in disconnection to each other, this chapter forms the introduction of our edited volume. We set out the main conceptual and analytical frameworks for the study of contemporary forms of contention in Africa, introducing a critical investigation of the ‘urbanization of conflict’ thesis and its supposed shift from rural rebellion to urban uprising. Instead of considering protests, riots, rebellions or armed conflict as radically distinct phenomena, we argue for an explicit relational understanding of geographies of contention. The complex entanglements between the different forms of contention are central to this relational approach and translate in four major analytical entries to study contentious politics: spaces, identities, repertoires and practices. Looking at both space and contention from the an entangled perspective opens up ways to interpret the histories and (dis)continuities, recurring narratives, and salient identities in contentious African politics and advances our understanding of the geographies of urban protest and armed conflict.
