This research project intends to analyse adaptive algorithms and synthesis techniques, which are to be embedded in the physical layer of a communications network. This comprises the real-time adjustment of the upstream network on a nanosecond scale, such as switching to the desired branch, adjusting gain and possibly filtering and regeneration to the current source. A high degree of adaptability becomes possible, when new signal processing code can be sent to the signal processing unit, reacting to situations which are unforseen ab initio, e.g. because of the load the network, or the difference in speed of source and destination.
