Project: Experimental and numerical analysis of the scaling laws, the unsteadiness and the turbulence structure in an expanding swirling flow

- Vortex precession and vortex breakdown in swirling abruptly expanding jets are analysed experimentally with a stereo PIV system by het KULeuven. The test geometries are a sudden expansion of a fully open pipe and an annular pipe of constant section and the abrupt expansion of a conical annular pipe. The flows are simulated with a hybrid RANS-LES turbulence model by the Ugent. In the core of the flow, coarse grid LES is used with a RANS k-e model as subgrid model. In wall vicinity, RANS is used with a mixed low Reynolds number and wall function description.
