Project: An ethical evaluation of alternative therapies intended to counter the shortage of transplant organs, including the use of marginal donors, living donors, xenotransplantation, stern cell therapy, and others
01-JAN-03 – 31-DEC-06
The main objective of this research proposal is the elaboration of a detailed ethical evaluation of the existing alternatives to allotransplantation. Each alternative will be evaluated and compared. Most of the attention will go to the ethical problems associated with further research on and possible trials of xenotransplantation. The focus is on the conflict between the scientific optimism and the high risks that are potentially involved for the individual recipients, the society at large, and animal welfare when use is made of the technique.
