Project: Urbanity and Semiosis in Recent New York Fiction

project duration
01-SEP-04 – 30-JUN-05
An investigation of the concepts of urbanity and semiosis as they manifest themselves in recent fiction on New York City (1977-2001). The project occupies a middle ground between a purely thematological approach and an excessively text-oriented, post-structuralist orientation. City literature will be regarded as a process (or collection of processes) of semantization. Simultaneously, it will be seen as an existential testing ground.
