Plastics hebben een wereldwijde verspreiding en worden in toenemende conencrations/hoeveelheden waargenomen in marine ecosystemen. Door hun persistentie (niet-afbreekbaarheid) in aquatische systemen zullen het globaal plastics probleem nog decennia lang voortduren.
