- The cheap processing of future optical signals (WDM) requires components with a complex optical functionality. Hybrid integration of existing active and passive components, in a photonic integrated circuit needs innovative forms of submicron connections. These are studied using existing simulation packets and new concepts like photonic crystals and coupled-cavity-waveguides this strongly aware of the industrial demand for wafer-scale techniques.
