Project: Assistive technology for community dwelling elderly people with chronic disabilities : needs, supply and use.

The study is situated in the field of gerontechnology, where ageing and technology are studied to increase the functioning and quality-of-life of elderly with disabilities. If a functional disability results in a handicap, a loss of quality-of-life or autonomy depends on the modulating effect of the physical and social environment and the coping strategies of the person. The use of assistive technology (AT) is an important coping strategy. The general aims of this study are twofold : a) the collection of representative and reliable data regarding the characteristics of community dwelling elderly people regarding their needs and demands, the knowledge of AT, the attitudes regarding the use of AT, the presence and use of AT in Flanders.To make this data available for research purposes, a database will we developed b) The development of instruments for 'Family and Elderly Care' and Home nursing, based on the study of the determinants, including : a question route comparable to the Kats-scale (screening instrument) which permits to investigate the relevant characteristics of individual elderly people regarding AT and linked with it a protocol to introduce a follow-up the AT.
