Project: An ecosystem approach in sustainable fisheries managment through local ecological knowledge

01/07/09 – 31/05/12

The objective of this research is to collect and synthesize local ecological knowledge (LEK) from (Belgian) fishermen about changing patterns in fish resources in the Belgian part of the North Sea (BPNS) during the last 50 years. It is expecteted that this LEK information can have a gap filing function in case information on the basis of scientific ecological knowledge (SEK) is lacking. LEK results can contribute to the understanding oof an ecosystem approach for sustainable fisheries management and will also allows us to further analyse spatial and temporal distribution of fishery activities and fish abundance in the BPNS. The latter information will be translated to spatial maps in the BPNS.
