- The geographical distribution of the bluetongue virus is related to the distribution of its main vector, Culicoides imicola. The occurrence of C. imicola is determined by several (a)biotical features, including soil moisture. Despite this knowledge, soil moisture was only indirectly used in epidemiological distribution models. The main objective of this project is to improve absence-presence modelling of C. imicola by the use of (1) soil moisture proxies and (2) machine learning.
