Project: Edition and study of the unedited annotations of Gemma Frisius to Copernicus' De Revolutionibus.
- project duration
- 01-OCT-00 – 31-DEC-02
- Gemma Frisius (1508-1555), professor at Louvain, was one of the few contemporaries who was able to comprehend the content of Copernicus' work in detail, unaffected by prevalent prejudices and with a thorough knowledge of the existing astronomical literature. His personal annotations in his copy of Copernicus, the most extensive notes found in any 16th-century copy, contain essential information about his reaction to Copernicus' new world view.
