Project: A diachronic study of pragmatic markers in English. Fundamental research into sematic development and grammaticalization by means of a corpus study

By means of a detailed historical corpus study, this project will trace the semantic and pragmatic development of four pragmatic markers (now, well, you know and I mean). The study will aim to map the diachronic processes of grammaticalization and subjectification of each particle, as well as their range of pragmatic (textual and expressive) functions.
