Project: Intercellular calcium signaling in non-excitable brain cells.

- Neural tissues contain neurons and non-excitable astrocytes and microvascular cells. The communication between astrocytes and endothelial/smooth muscle cells is important in neurovascular coupling but the signaling molecules are unknown. We hypothesize that calcium signals propagated by the diffusion of intracellular messengers through gap junctions play a role in this communication. This hypothesis will be investigated on co-cultures using calcium imaging and flash photolysis of caged compounds.
