Project: Effect of cytokines on calcium siganal communciation between astrocytes and endothelial cells of the blood-brain barrier

project duration
01-JAN-03 – 31-OCT-08
The opening of the blood-brain barrier is an important step in the pathogenesis of neuro-inflammatory diseases like multiple sclerosis and AIDS dementia. Cytokines like TNFx IL-1B and IFNy and also the endothelial cytoplasmic calcium concentration are important extracellular and intracellular messengers involved in controlling and opening the barrier. In this project we will investigate the interaction between endothelial cell-to-cell calcium signaling and cytokines, with the purpose to come to better understanding of the relation between both signaling molecules in their influence and control of the blood-brain barrier.
