Project: The Belgian global expansion (1831-1914). A systematic study of the determinants, actors and evolution of the Belgian colonial and financial-industrial expansion, from Leopold I until World War I.

project duration
01-JAN-02 – 31-OCT-06
During the 19th century, Belgium was involved in a global expansion due to royal colonial aspirations on the one hand and financial, industrial and commercial globalisation of Belgian entrepreneurs and banks on the other hand. This research aims to systematise the knowledge about this double movement and to analyse the dynamics underlying them.
