- Geert De Jaeger is full professor Plant Biotechnology at Ghent University and Group leader at the VIB Center for Plant Systems Biology. His research group on Functional Interactomics develops proteomics tools for mapping protein interaction networks in plants. More recently, they have been exploring the protein signaling network of plant energy management around the central hubs TOR and SnRK1. Today they investigate how carbon and nitrogen levels in the cell regulate SnRK1, and how this fuel gauge regulates source-sink transport of those nutrients. Due to their sessile life in a changing environment, plants constantly monitor energy and nutrient status in order to make choices which organs to feed, or where to growth or respond to stress. Those molecular mechanisms of energy homeostasis and re-allocation lie at the very heart of primary metabolism, but remain to a large extent elusive. However, with further climate change ahead of us, we urgently need to get grip on those principles, in order to help sustain crop yield for futur generations.
