Arnout Schelstraete is a PhD research fellow within the ConstitUGent research unit and is a member of the Human Rights Centre. In 2015 he obtained a Master’s diploma of Law at Ghent University. After starting his career as a lawyer with LDR-advocaten (2015-2016) he enrolled as a law clerk (‘referendaris’), assisting the judges of the Council for Permit Disputes (Raad voor Vergunningsbetwistingen or ‘RvVb’) and the Enforcement Court (Handhavingscollege or ‘HHC’). Since 2019 he has been a member of the coordination Bureau of the Service of the Administrative Courts (Dienst van de Bestuursrechtscolleges or ‘DBRC’). He has a particular interest in questions of law regarding the Council for Permit Disputes and the Council of State and concerning the environmental disputes brought before them (cf. master’s thesis: “De Raad voor Vergunningsbetwistingen: vergelijking van de rechtspraak met deze van de Raad van State” – 2015). Arnout’s research project is focused on the rise of regional administrative courts and the uncharted domain of rule of law questions related to that specific phenomenon.
