- Passionate about crafting impactful legal solutions, I am Yana Yakushina—an experienced legal researcher, policy analyst, and advocate dedicated to the protection of dark skies and the advancement of space law. My expertise lies in meticulously navigating complex legal landscapes, interpreting vast datasets, and delivering clear, valuable conclusions. Currently pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of Ghent (Belgium) as part of the Horizon EU project - PLAN-B, I am actively shaping the legal narrative around light pollution as a critical environmental concern. As a co-coordinator of the PLAN-B project, I spearhead efforts to establish a robust legal framework for addressing the negative effects of Artificial Light at Night (ALAN). On the space law front, I serve as Deputy Executive Director at the Space Court Foundation Inc., I contribute to major projects, including the "Big Book of Space Law," and actively engage in diverse initiatives related to space law education and developments. My global impact is evident through my involvement in comprehensive legal research projects with renowned entities such as DarkSky International, EU Commission, Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic, Ministry of Innovation and Technology of Spain, International Astronomical Union (IAU, IAU CPS), International Institute of Space Law (IISL), and United Nations Organisations (UNOOSA). Currently, I also lead a research group within the IAU CPS Policy Hub. I manage in-depth analyses of national approaches to protect dark and quiet skies. As a member and advisor to NGOs, including Dark-Sky International (IDA), Starlight Foundation, and International Institute of Space Law (IISL), I actively contribute to the collective pursuit of light pollution and space-related goals. In 2023, I co-founded Leve(n)de Nacht vzw (Living Night), a Belgian dark sky protection organization. Furthermore, I am an enthusiastic presenter and public speaker with excellent visual presentation skills, I leverage my communication prowess to advocate for legal recognition of light pollution as a pressing environmental issue. Specialities: Dark Sky Protection, Light Pollution Mitigation, International Law, Environmental Law, Sustainability, Space Law, Space Sustainability, Policy- and Law-Making, Analysis of National Regulations and Policies, United Nations Organizations, Policy and Standards.
