Pieter Beck (previously Present) is a post-doctoral researcher at the Department of Philosophy and Moral Sciences (Ghent University). He studied Eastern Languages and Cultures (Indology, BA, 2011) and Philosophy (BA, 2012 & MA, 2013) at Ghent University and obtained his Phd in 2019 at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). He is currently an FWO (Research Foundation-Flanders) postdoctoral fellow, with a project on 'Chemical reactions: the performance and (re)interpretation of chemical experiments in the Dutch Republic (1750-1800)'. His research is situated in the field of integrated history and philosophy of science (IHPS), with a focus on the history of science in the "long" 18th century. More specifically, his research deals with questions related to the nature of scientific practice, the role of experimentation, and the institutionalisation and teaching of science, especially chemistry.
